This Innovative Apple Crisp Recipe Screams Jewish New Year…Try It!

Well folks, it’s been a heck of a year. Between a pandemic, a whole truckload of racial inequality issues and raging fires across the Western United States, I would say we all deserve a little sweetness in our lives.

Rosh Hashanah is upon us. This is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. It is the beginning of what Jews call the High Holidays, a ten-day period that ends with Yom Kippur—the holiest day of the Jewish year.

One of the most popular traditions during Rosh Hashanah involves eating apple slices dipped in honey. Ancient Jews believed apples had healing properties, and the honey signifies the hope that the new year will be sweet.

I thought it would be fun to create something a little more innovative surrounding this tradition and I want to share it with you.

Trader Joe’s came out with a no-bake Nut Butter Bar mix. Upon seeing this item in the grocery store, I immediately wondered if it could work as a baked apple coating.

Here is how it came out;

First, I pre-heat the oven to 400F.

Then, slice up 3-4 apples, or more depending on how many people you are feeding.

Place honey in one bowl and the nut butter bar mix in another.

Dip each apple slice in honey, then the mix.

Place the slices on a parchment lined baking tray and cook for 15 minutes. Let them cool 5-7 minutes. Serve with more honey or your favorite nut butter as a dip.

I hope you try this dish at home. It is very simple and it happens to be gluten-free!

Let’s hope the forthcoming year is a MUCH sweeter one than this year has been.
